Another gloomy day, another 3 Songs post. But this time, it’s not a depressing set. Today, I just wanted to show everyone how diverse my taste in music is.
Let’s start with something from one of my top 15 favorite rock bands of all time.
Ghost’s “Enter Sandman” (A Metallica Cover)
In 2018, Cardinal Copia (then-leader of the occult rock/heavy metal band Ghost), with the help of fellow Swedish musicians Candlemass and Vargas & Lola, performed a cover of Metallica’s most unmistakable song, “Enter Sandman”, in front of the legendary thrash metal band at the Polar Music Prize in Sweden. It definitely sounded like “Enter Sandman” if it were written by Ghost, and the Metallica and Ghost fanboys in me are giddy.
Since then, I hoped there would be a studio version, and it finally happened when The Metallica Blacklist (an all-star tribute album) was released to celebrate The Black Album’s 30th anniversary. It’s just as amazing as the live one.
BINI’s “Salamin Salamin”
I know, I know. “Ian, you listen to BINI?” Yes. Why not? They’re good. Honestly, I’m only familiar with three songs from the P-Pop group so far, but I can tell they’re good, and I’m really happy that they became the first Filipino music act to perform at Coachella. Congratulations, walo!
And there’s a deeper reason why I like “Salamin Salamin”: last year, while I was waiting for the Foo Fighters concert at the Singapore Grand Prix, the BINI hit was one of the songs played near the Padang Stage. That was really memorable for me. Whoever played it, thank you. Idol kita!
Outkast’s “Hey Ya!”
To cap off the diverse playlist, let me share a song that I didn’t really like at first.
2003, when I became a fan of rock music, I swore not to appreciate any song that’s outside the genre. Rakers ako, tol! Yeah, I’m not proud of that one, but that was my truth then. It took years before I really became a fan of music from any year and any genre. When I finally did in my later years in college, I appreciated the danceable hit released in the same year I swore to be just a rock fan: “Hey Ya!” by the brilliant hip-hop duo Outkast. I love the song so much that sometimes I even do the dance when I hear it.
Sorry, it took me a while, André 3000.
That’s it, pansit.
